Inflatable carolers bring Christmas joy

Inflatable carolers bring Christmas joy

It is never too early to start your Christmas shopping as Hammacher has already started putting up Yuletide items for sale such as this Synchronized Light and Sound Inflatable Holiday Carolers. Standing a full 8′ tall with a trio of cheerful carolers (Santa himself, a penguin, and an immaculately dressed snowman), all three are flanked by a couple of Christmas trees, singing in unison with flashing lights courtesy of 7-watt commercial lights within. A built-in fan inflates the entire setup, maintaining its firmness without the risk of sagging or drooping. Hopefully little kids won’t be curious enough to prick this when they see one. I personally find it hard to believe that such a gift costs $239.95, perhaps Santa could bring an early Christmas bonus for me?

R2-D2 Wireless Web Camera

R2-D2 Wireless Web Camera

R2-D2, let’s count the number of functions thou has. You can strike off ‘Wireless Web Camera’ from the list as well with this new offering from Hammacher. This little number is actually a 628 x 528 pixel web camera that transmits real-time video and audio to a computer wirelessly, boasting worldwide remote access capabilities that enables you to virtually control R2-D2’s movements from anywhere in the world as long as there is an Internet connection. You use a lightsaver-shaped remote to control the droid, and he is even capable of 360 spins. A sensor in front prevents R2-D2 from dropping over a table edge while emitting an audible warning to protect your $349.95 investment from being the robotic Humpty Dupty. One thing that bugs me is the half dozen AA batteries required to fuel this thing.

Seoul Commtech EZON digital door lock

Seoul Commtech EZON digital door lockSeoul Commtech has just unveiled its EZON (SHS-1110) digital door lock for the Korean market, featuring an aluminum alloy construction and black colored tempered glass complete with a touch sensor for enhanced security in your home. Looks like a crowbar would be no good in this case, but if somebody really wanted to break in, all they need to do is to spy on your PIN number from afar. I guess it would be best to use this coupled with a traditional padlock system. The EZON digital door lock is tipped to retail for approximately $180.

Brian the Brain

Brian the Brain

This unique device brings a new take to the word ‘encyclopedia’ as it incorporates the concise volumes from Britannica, a dictionary, and a world history timeline into a 13.75″ x 11.75″ x 10″ ‘body’, so to speak. Featuring just a brain and two eyes enclosed in a transparent glass case, Brian the Brain responds to verbal prompts thanks to voice recognition technology. It is smart enough to ask questions such as a child’s likes and dislikes, using such responses to crack a joke or initiate a conversation. Brian has also enough gray matter to store phone numbers by hooking it up to a phone jack. Other features include word, memory, and trivia games - this is certainly more unnerving than the talking head in Brain Age. A digital clock, calendar, MP3 player jack, integrated speaker, and retractable keyboard for text communication rounds off the list of features. Brian the Brain retails for $119.95 and is powered by a trio of AAA batteries.

Burmester 061 CD player costs a bomb

Burmester 061 CD player costs a bomb

Are CD players truly different when placed side-by-side with each other? Well, audiophiles will definitely be able to tell the difference and chances are they’ll fall for the Burmester 061 CD player from Germany. It comes with a Philips CD 2 Pro direct drive with a modified servo mechanism as well as advanced D/A converters that can up-sample standard CD audio to either 96 or 192 KHz for advanced processing further down the signal chain. A milled aluminum chassis with a top-loading 10mm thick tray is added for aesthetic purposes, while sporting RCA and Toslink input and output with unbalanced and XLR outputs completing the picture. How much for such extravagance? A cool $11,995.

Hidden touchpad in concept cellphone

Hidden touchpad in concept cellphoneA cellphone with a touchpad - somehow that isn’t exactly new to me. This concept takes a slider form factor with a touchpad hidden underneath, using handwriting recognition software that translates finger strokes into letters, numbers, and symbols. No idea if the concept has made provisions for a stylus though as the finger is more or less an unrefined manner of getting the message across. Designed by Sang-Hoon Lee, this extremely basic handset just shoves the touchpad away when it is not in use, but other than that, nothing groundbreaking to crow about.

4-foot Half Upside Down Corner Tree

4-foot Half Upside Down Corner Tree

I know, I know, Christmas is still a long way off but you’d be surprised as to how fast time flies. Why not make your preparations a little earlier with the 4-foot Half Upside Down Corner Tree? This uniqe pre-lit fir can be attached to your ceiling, freeing up more room for those who live in cramped apartments. The lifelike tips of this tree are made of PVC and it comes pre-strung with bright white commercial lights that have been rated for 3,000 hours of operation. Each $139.95 purchase comes with 370 tips and 200 lights. Now here’s food for thought - when you physically place presents directly beneath this tree, technically speaking those presents are on top of it. Get my drift? How’s that for an oxymoron?

No idea on whether these will be released anywhere else in the world, but we’ll keep a keen eye out.
