Buffalo Blu-Ray and HD-DVD drive

Buffalo Blu-Ray and HD-DVD drive

Our friends at AkihabaraNews have pointed that Buffalo and I-O Data are coming out with dual Blu-Ray + HDDVD drives. This further validates our point that soon enough, consumers won’t care about who wins the format war, especially when it looks like we’re headed into a multiple format world…

RabbitAir Flat Air Purifier

RabbitAir Flat Air Purifier

This is the first flat and wall-mountable air purifier that I know of. It is *supposed to* be quiet and use multiple stages of filtering and an activated carbon filter to purify the air. The filters are washable and should last about two years, according to the manufacturer.

The RabbitAir has adapts itself to the air quality (how is “air quality” defined?) but also to the lighting conditions: in a dark environment, it will turn itself in the most silent mode (meaning it was noisier before…) to let you sleep, or watch a movie. Still, if I had an air purifier, I’d like it to look like that.

EyeTV 250 HDTV Tuner for Mac

EyeTV 250 HDTV Tuner for Mac

This silver box is the EyeTV 250, a USB TV box that converts over-the-air HDTV (or NTSC) signals to into MPEG-2 (compressed) video, thanks to its integrated hardware compressor. Compression does bring a loss of quality, especially of fast-moving sequences, but it is a necessary evil to preserve space on your hard drive. To be fair, the image quality is usually OK. I would have preferred them to include the H.264 (MPEG4) compression instead, but I guess that it’s just too expensive for this product line.

The antenna is not included. This product requires Mac OS 10.4 or better.

Duff Beer can is a radio

Duff Beer can is a radioWhy not ride on the Simpsons mania while it is still hot? You can now listen to good old AM/FM radio using a can of Duff Beer - or what looks like one anyway. I don’t think many people would want to fork out $17.99 for a radio, but hey, if you’re a big fan of the Simpsons, who am I to say where and how you should spend your dollars on? As for me, I’ll be sticking to free Internet radio for now. It would have been nice to see the manufacturer include some form of MP3 playback capability and a memory card slot of some sort for a little bit more dough.

Spiderman and Venom on talking terms

Spiderman and Venom on talking termsAm I dreaming? Looks like Spiderman and his nemesis Venom can now carry a friendly conversation without hurtling punches at each other, although witty repartees are still welcome. This was made possible with the introduction of Spiderman and Venom-shaped walkie talkies. You twist the right arm on either character to form an antenna, click a button and start chatting away. Granted, it might look a little weird for a grown up to use one of these, but I certainly won’t say no to chatting on one of these. You can pick up a set for $19.99, although the 8 AAA batteries required to power both are not included. Pity they got Venom’s body all wrong.

Nokia hi-tech store opening in London

Nokia hi-tech store opening in LondonTo say that the Apple store is a success would be an understatement, and Nokia is now about to follow in the Cupertino firm’s footsteps. The Finnish cellphone manufacturer will be opening the doors to its high tech store in Regent Street, London, making it the eighth of its kind. This store allows potential customers to browse through the latest and greatest handsets that are on display via a pop-up screen on a large LCD screen just like a mini tutorial. Of course, if you’re looking for something more upmarket, there is always the luxury Vertu line to keep your wallet busy.

Samsung VP-HMX10A HD compact camera

Samsung VP-HMX10A HD compact camera

Samsung has launched its first VP-HMX10A HD compact camera that features a resolution of 720p. Not exactly full HD yet, but at least there is some form of progress. Another feature of this camera includes a 10x optical zoom, 4GB of flash memory for all your recording purposes, and the MPEG 4 standard for recording purposes. There is a time lapse of 3 seconds between turning the camera on and recording, which is pretty fast. Additional storage options include an SD memory card slot. Guess it is time to at least upgrade to a 720p HDTV if you want to preview all your images over a TV in the living room, eh?

Sharp experimental LCD is super thin

Sharp experimental LCD is super thin

Sharp of Japan has recently paraded its extremely thin experimental LCD display that could potentially be used as a TV someday down the road. Measuring 52″ wide with a thickness of just 2cm, this specification definitely beats those found on current 52″ LCD displays that are approximately 500% thicker. Not only that, home theater buffs will be pleased to know that this new LCD display has a contrast ratio of 100,000 to 1, consuming a mere 140kWh a year in total. Hopefully Sharp hurries up and brings this technology to the masses in order to push HD across living rooms throughout the world.
