I’m surprised that so many writers still care about the HD-DVD & Blu-Ray format. Several manufacturers such as Samsung and LG are preparing, or already have, dual-format drives. It is only a matter of time before dual-technology players flood the market and prices will go down dramatically (just look at the DVD player market today).
That’s what happens to any “fixed-function” technology. Once you have a device that can play a movie with a decent image quality, there are not a lot of things that can be improved - at least not a lot of things that consumers are willing to pay premium money for.
What do you think?

Hang-up your phone – literally! If only this concept phone could enter production! I’d like to have this in my living room. The phone is simple and elegant – I just wish that it was thinner. To end a conversation, just hang it… Concept by Alec Wong & Donn Koh

From now on, there’s no need for a computer when it comes to getting videos on your iPod, thanks to MacWay’s iCube iRec. This dock lets iPod users connect an analog video source (VCR, DVD player, Camcorder…) to it and at a touch of a button, will convert and record the video directly onto the iPod’s drive. Users can tweak the quality settings to choose between a nice image or more hard drive space.
It works with the following iPods: iPod 5G (Video) 30 Go | iPod 5G (Video) 60-80 Go | iPod U2 base Video 30 Go | iPod U2 base Video 60 Go.

Designer Pinju Chen has come up with this speaker chair that can generate extremely strong bass tones from the bottm. In addition of its speaker capabilities, it also contains a CD player, making it a somewhat complete audio toy. I don’t know if the sound quality is good or not or even if it’s comfortable, but this chair would probably be a good match my game console and a couple of action games.

Studio Leung has a bunch of crazy USB drives (both products and concepts), but the one that caught our attention is this 4GB USB drive that looks like a stone. It’s made of synthetic resin and should have the exact texture and temperature of a stone. It is 43×40x25mm big. Just don’t lose it on the beach!

Samsung is definitely in the MP3 game for the long haul with these two new MP3 players that will hit the market pretty soon. First we have the S5 which is a follow up to the K5, boasting built-in speakers, a 1.8″ color display at 222 x 176 resolution, Bluetooth connectivity to give you the wireless look, and integrated video playback - although I wouldn’t bank on it for my primary video needs. The Samsung T10 is touted to be the spiritual successor to the K3 in terms of design and controls, with little else known about the specifications other than supporting both audio and video playback and Bluetooth connectivity, all on just 30 hours of battery life.

BlackBerry owners definitely do not have the same luxury as iPod owners when it comes to the choice of third party accessories, but it is nice to see the Berry Buddy that compliments the BlackBerry Pearl very nicely. When connected, your Pearl will be charged in order to prep itself for the next day’s use. It looks extremely sleek and comes in a similar color as the Pearl, although the glossy surface it comes in will probably be a prime candidate for fingerprint magnets.

The Solar BoGoLight runs on 3 rechargeable AA batteries and has only one switch on/off button (too bad that you need a screwdriver to open the battery chamber). It also uses Light Emitting Diodes (LED) which consumes very little power. Obviously the solar panel recharges the batteries during the day, and I would *assume* that there’s enough juice to power the LEDs for a whole night. The best thing is: when you buy one, one is also sent in a place like Rwanda where light can bring safety or literacy. If you know what the real battery life is, could you post a comment down here?

Siemens has teamed up with PalmSecure to create a device that works like a fingerprint reader, except that it scans the palm of your hand and tries to recognize the vein patterns underneath your skin which are unique to each of us.
Although it is an interesting way of using biometrics, it is still a little big and clumsy. It’s probably a bit more secure than (whole-thumb) fingerprint readers because the user doesn’t actually leave his/her palm print *on* the device. It will probably work for niche markets such as banks or hospitals, but I don’t think that this will become popular with consumers anytime soon.

Our friends from GearFuse are reporting that xinpin.iphone.com.cn has posted “leaked” pictures of an unannounced K-Series Sony Ericsson phone. Now, it’s hard to tell if this a marketing ploy or not, but it’s out, so we might as well talk about it. The word on the street is that this phone might be designed to compete with the unannounced Nokia N82, set to be released in Q4. This Sony Ericsson has a 3x optical zoom which hints that SE will brand it as an higher-end imaging phone.
Nokia N82 rumored specs:
WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G320×240 display5 Megapixel camera
