Researchers at the Tohoku University are currently working on a prototype of what could potentially be the smallest gas turbine engine in the world. It is hoped that this palm-sized motor will one day be incorporated in autonomous robots to function as a portable engine for personal transportation devices. This engine measures a mere 4″ in diameter and 6″ in length, but is capable of a rotational speed that hits between 500,000 to 600,000 rpm thanks to the special air bearings used inside. As long as fuel is available, this gas turbine engine will be able to run unlike battery-powered ones that need to stop for a recharge. Sounds pretty fancy - hopefully the benefits of such research will be able to trickle down to the layman soonest possible.

Taking a leak for guys can be a very boring experience, since you wouldn’t want to be caught looking at your neighbors lest you be labeled a pervert. Staring at a wall is no fun either, which is why the Piss-Screen works great to keep you occupied while you play. Each urinal has to be equipped with a pressure-sensitive inlay, where the game in question models Need for Speed, and the player (you) taking a leak will control a car running rampant through the streets. If your reaction is too slow, the car will crash followed by the flashing message, “Too pissed to drive? Take a Taxi instead!”. Sounds like a pretty cool idea to be implemented in bars and other watering holes, but I wonder what happens when people flick cigarette butts into these urinals.

The Self Cooling Seat Cushion is definitely an understated piece of furniture accessory, bringing a new level of comfort to whoever sits on it? This comfortable seat cushion was manufactured using natural minerals that boast special cooling properties in order to keep your posterior cool even when you’re seated there throughout the day trying desperately to meet deadlines. You can use this with chairs, sofas, and other seating surfaces, and best of all is, there are no pesky batteries to replace! There is a product disclaimer that mentions not to expose the cushion to direct sunlight as that might cause damage to the cooling materials within, so I guess it doesn’t make much sense to use this in a car although every car ought to come with cool seats, especially on a long journey. Interested parties can pick one up for $7.99.

The Inflight Power Recharger is a device that claims to recharge any USB-powered device as long as you can access a headphone jack on a plane, train, or bus. This tiny device functions as a ‘charge pump’ that stores low amounts of voltage retrieved from the headphone jack in a capacitor, subsequently converting it into regulated USB power. The process sounds extremely tedious and you could wait a long time for a full charge, but that is always better than a flat battery. The Inflight Power Recharger also stores two AAA batteries that help charge your devices in the event where there is no headphone jack available. The base unit retails for $34.99 upwards, depending on where you pick one up.

Surely you can’t fault the world for thinking that robots are an everyday part of Japanese life, considering how the Japanese have managed to develop a robot who is capable of dancing according to the aizu-bandaisan style, which is actually a traditional Japanese dance. Since there is a prevalent fear that such a dance will die out in due time, the Japanese aims to transfer such knowledge over to a robot. They’d best make robots that procreate and are capable of making backup copies of this knowledge too, since humans aren’t too diligent when it comes to backing up either. Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction, and I wonder how much this robot costs to develop when the solution could be as easy as making a recording on video and uploading it to the Internet for the whole world to see.

Where do you think Santa is when it is not Christmas? Why, he is not in the North Pole as most people claim, but instead resides inside this circular USB hub. Measuring 11cm in diameter, this USB hub comes with a quartet of high speed USB 2.0 ports and certainly looks like a good candidate for a rather cute-looking paperweight. While Christmas is still a long way off (although time has a strange habit of creeping up almost too fast), you can always pick up this Santa Claus USB hub before the mad holiday rush starts for 14.90 Euros.

Is there anything the humble NES controller cannot do? Somebody with a decent amount of technical know how and plenty of time decided to rip the classic NES controller apart and replacing its innards with parts from a mouse, bringing us the monstrosity known as the NES Gamepad Mouse. Granted, the nostalgic factor is strong with this DIY project, but when it comes to practicality, zero points will be awarded. It will only be a matter of time before your hand protests in pain due to the unergonomic form factor that welcomes RSI with open arms.

Looks like Sony isn’t about to just cede the portable audio player market to Apple without a fight - word has it that the giant electronics company is currently working on a new class of Walkman known as “Rolly”. It features an easily-gripped egg shape design and comes with an integrated speaker and a ‘choreography’ system which most probably involves changing lights or music in tandem with movement. This leak did not contain a release date, so stay tuned for more information. Does the Rolly’s form factor sound as though sales will take off in the long run? I think most people prefer their electronics to come in a sleek design without causing too obvious a bulge in their pants pocket.

This Camp/Beacon/Tent Flashlight is a truly unique device, as it comes with its very own tripod stand and can be set into a range of configurations, making this one-of-a-kind. Depending on the situation, you can use it as an extremely bright flashlight, a flood light, or even transform it into a hanging tent light when you head to the great outdoors. Heck, it also doubles up as a standing camp light or a standing beacon if need be. There is an emergency red beacon included that flashes to attract attention of rescuers. Hard to believe that a mere three AAA batteries will be able to provide up to 200 hours of light in flashing mode and 40 hours in steady/on mode. After factoring in taxes and such, the Multi-purpose Flashlight retails for £35.25. Summer’s not over yet, so you’d better pick this up in case you want to camp a few nights’ away from home.
