E-ink display use oil and water While oil and water don’t mix, LG Philips has decided otherwise by filing a patent that combines both oil and water capsule technology that will be used in an electronic ink display, fused with Organic LED (OLED) technology found in flexible displays. Since pixels are created out of minuscule capsules of oil and water instead of OLEDs, you won’t run the risk of higher production costs and a large defect rate associated with ‘cooking’ in flexibled displays. Opaque oil stored within the colored capsule will obscure its color until a current passes through, whereby oil will be forced out of the way and changing the pixel’s color in the process. There is still plenty of work to be done before such a display with a fast refresh rate and low power consumption is released, but this is a step in the right direction.
