Sabeco Solar Powered Shaver

Sabeco Solar Powered Shaver

The Sabeco Solar Powered Shaver is definitely a friend of the environment (bar its manufacturing process), relying on nothing but pure solar power (just like Kal-El) to nourish its internal batteries to provide a welcome shave to men who have started to develop a stubble. Now if Tom Hanks had this in Cast Away, at least he’ll still look spiffy when he made a return to civilization instead of being that bearded, scraggly-looking monster. The Sabeco Solar Powered Shaver is nothing short of a boon to those who love the great outdoors. I wonder why nobody came up with a hand-crank version yet - perhaps a shaver requires way too much cranking to be power efficient?

Wall paint absorbs solar power

Wall paint absorbs solar power

Now should these special flexible plastic sheets that come with solar cells painted on them actually be used in a widespread manner, the whole world will definitely end up for the better homes will be able to rely more on natural sunlight for all their power needs instead of nuclear and coal stations. Developed by researchers at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, this special solar cells could possibly be printed using cheap home-based inkjet printers, although that premise is still a long way off as there is plenty of work to be done before such a stage is reached. Still, this invention would have a two-fold benefit - it not only helps you save on your power bill, you also would love to repaint your entire home all too often in order to save even more money by relying on solar power, resulting in a neighborhood of meticulously maintained homes.

Logitech VX Nano notebook mouse

Logitech VX Nano notebook mouseThe Logitech VX Nano notebook mouse shares plenty from its VX Revolution predecessor, save that it comes in a slimmer low-profile design. The receiver is also very small, protruding a mere 8mm from your USB port and allowing you to leave it in there without unplugging it when storing your notebook. The double AAA battery setup also makes it heavier than normal, so the weight could put some people off. I don’t like notebook mice for one reason - their extremely small size makes my hand all cramped up after using it for long periods of time. Unfortunately, that is a tradeoff one has to make when traveling, and the Logitech VX Nano doesn’t look to change that notion anytime soon. Still, the ability for the VX Nano’s receiver to remain plugged into the notebook at all times makes that little bit of convenience an interesting factor to consider when you’re looking at a $69.99 notebook mouse.

Battlefield scrying skills wanted

Battlefield scrying skills wantedDarpa, the Pentagon’s research arm, is currently wokring on a software suite that is supposed to predict the outcome of a battle in order to aid battlefield commanders make better decisions under high pressure situations. The program is known as Deep Green, developing alternatives ahead of real time should the situation turn awry. I wonder what the enemies would think about it, and is it possible to fool Deep Green into a surefire lose tactic on their side just to launch a surprise attack to catch the army off-guard? The battlefield is beginning to look more and more like a RTS game (to the commanders at least) as technology progresses. I just wonder whether they’ll ever be able to reach the invincible status of Chinook on the battle front with Deep Green.

Steam engine for lilliputians

Steam engine for lilliputiansIqbal Ahmed from India has been recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the inventor of the smallest working stationary steam engine in the world. A mere 10cc of water is used to generate steam that enables this engine to run for approximately two minutes. The alcohol burner-powered boiler (measuring 45mm high and 15mm in diameter) is connected to the steam intake nipple via a 1.5″ pipe. The entire machine measures 6.8mm x 16.24mm and weighs just 1.72 grams. Now this won’t be able to be used in any practical manner, unless someone invents an incredible shrinking machine. Still, it is great to see something miniaturized to such dimensions through a labor of love. One thing’s for sure - you gotta get your hands dirty to build one.

Foot Controlled Mouse

Foot Controlled Mouse

Okay, I’m not sure what you call this, but can you actually classify a device that requires your foot to use as a mouse? Dubbed the Foot Controlled Mouse, this device comes with a slipper-like device for you to move the pointer about, while the other foot is used to manipulate the programmable buttons which include double click, left click, right click, and a scroll function. This would certainly work great for those who have lost the use of their arms. You can pick up the Foot Controlled Mouse for $199.

Helios H2000 upscaling DVD player

Helios H2000 upscaling DVD player

Helios Labs has just dropped an announcement of its H2000 upscaling DVD player that sounds like an absolute bargain. $99 will net you a DVD playback device that comes with standard resolution HDMI, component, and VGA video sources, upscaling your regular DVD to 720p or 1080i resolution for the benefit of those who own HDTVs. This region-free DVD player also upscales video in MPEG-4, XviD, DivX, and MPEG-2 format via HDMI, component, or VGA inputs. VobSub subtitle format is also supported, and that is guaranteed to bring a smile to faces of foreign film fans. The Helios H2000 will hit US retailers this August for $99 apiece. Many people still haven’t made the HD jump as they’re pretty happy with the picture of standard DVDs, and this certainly makes bridging the gap all the more difficult.

Megaphone: turn any mobile phone into a game controller

Megaphone: turn any mobile phone into a game controller

(Yahoo Design Week) – I (Eliane) was at Yahoo Design Week where students design projects were exhibited under a tent on the Yahoo campus. The Megaphone project designed by Jury Hahn from New York University was the most gadget-related one.

It is a real-time multiplayer collaborative gaming platform for big screens in public spaces. The user simply has to call the phone number displayed on top of the screen (see photo) and his avatar will appear immediately on the screen. No need to download or install any application, to control the avatar and shoot others, the keypad and the voice are sufficient.

I like the “Space Invaders” feel of the games and the simplicity of the UI. The voice-based games are particularly fun to play: people are literally screaming in their phones to grab items with their hippo-avatar. This could be a great entertainment while waiting in line in front of the movie theater! The Megaphone platform could be used to control any type of services, for more information about getting it for your venue, go to this page: playmegaphone.com/deployment.php. Look at the playmegaphone website, there is a video of people playing in Time Square.

HTC Cavalier available unlocked

HTC Cavalier available unlockedThe HTC Cavalier smartphone has already arrived on US shores and can be picked up without being tied down to any wireless carrier for a princely sum of $550. Features of the Cavalier includes HSDPA connectivity, a 2 megapixel camera, a 400MHz processor running at the heart of things, WiFi, a microSD memory card slot, and Windows Mobile 6 Standard along with mobile Office support. You can use the HTC Cavalier with an existing SIM card from either AT&T or T-Mobile depending on the plan you’re currently tied to. It is highly probable that a subsidized version of the Cavalier will appear on T-Mobile - more word on that as news breaks. Looks like another souped up smartphone for the masses…
