Atlantic iceBar waterproof speakers

Atlantic iceBar waterproof speakers

Check out this Atlantic iceBar waterproof speaker system that comes with its own space to keep your iPod nano locked away dry and secure even if you’re having a ball of a time frolicking about in the pool. The iceBar not only pumps out tunes in wet and wild surroundings, it still provides access to your nano’s Click Wheel, power buttom, and mute functions without missing a beat. One of the major drawbacks would be battery life, since a trio of AA batteries can last for just 18 hours of non-stop playback. Expect that figure to drop dramatically if you’re one of those who love fiddling with your nano, skipping tracks all too often. The Atlantic iceBar waterproof speakers will retail for approximately $70 and appear in store shelves sometime near the holiday season.

Colorware spruces up iPhone

Colorware spruces up iPhone

Why look like one of the many iPhone grunts when you can actually personalize it with some Colorware custom paint job? Their service isn’t cheap though, retailing for $150 for a new coat of paint. You get to choose from two color choices for the back portion of your iPhone, and if you are willing to spare a few more dollars, the shiny metal part and Home button located on the front can be customized, in addition to the Apple logo located behind, its earbuds, and dock. Alternatively, you can also pick up pre-painted iPhones in both 4GB and 8GB capacities. Are you willing to forgo your iPhone warranty for a custom paint job? Why not send it in after the warranty runs out - that way, you’ll have an iPhone that looks as good as new when painted.

Black Box DVR is tiny

Black Box DVR is tinyThe Black Box Digital Video Recorder (DVR) is certainly one tiny terror, capable of recording DVD-quality VGA videos at 30fps despite its diminutive size. To get an idea of just how small it is, it measures a mere 2.6″ x 2.2″ x 0.4″ and weighs 45 grams, letting you slip one into your pocket without feeling that it is there in the first place. One of the reason why it could be so small would be the lack of internal memory, where the user has to rely on a miniSD memory card slot instead for storage purposes. The price is also inversely proportionate to its price at $500 a pop.

Chinook claims it is invincible

Chinook claims it is invincible

Chinook, a checkers playing computer has laid claim that is can never be defeated, while a draw is a remote possibility. This is a pretty bold claim to make, but compared to chess, checkers is way less complicated. Normal folks like you and I will probably lose to Chinook in the blink of an eye, considering how it has the advantage of going through 500 billion billion checkers positions to be where it is at today. No doubt playing against Chinook would never be a betting affair considering the outcome is more or less decided before the first checkers piece is moved. I’m still waiting for bots in computer games (especially FPS titles) to emulate the human mind so that I can minimize my contact with humans as much as possible.

Paint by Numbers grow up

Paint by Numbers grow upThe Nintendo DS platform has offered a fair number of games that take an unorthodox approach, and this title from Mercury Games in no different. Dubbed “Paint by DS”, you can tell as much by its title that this is a digital coloring book that allows players to digitally recreate masterpieces from renowned artists of the past. The DS stylus is used to mix oil and water-based paints, creating colors and consistencies which is followed by painting the artwork itself. There are 15 paintings in all to master in addition to mini games and puzzles. Paint by DS will be released in Europe this August, with a Q4 release date slated for the US. What is the quirkiest DS title you’ve seen to date?

Voodoo evokes green-eyed monster

Voodoo evokes green-eyed monsterFor those who want to get more gaming action out of their laptop than just Minesweeper, the Voodoo Envy H:171 is a pretty good candidate. Everything about the Envy H:171 has been optimized for superior gaming performance, doubling up as a digital media center as well. Features include a 17″ display, an Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 processor, and a maximum RAM count of 4GB. You get a dual 512MB video card solution running in parallel, a 750GB hard drive, a DL DVD burner, and a 1.3 megapixel camera for webcam purposes. Additional connectivity can be found in the form of WiFi and Bluetooth. The Voodoo H:171 is lovely to own, but with prices starting from $5,000 upwards till $8,117, you had better love portable gaming so much to invest that amount of money in a laptop.

Chinese get Cect 599 iPhone clone

Chinese get Cect 599 iPhone clone

Check out the Cect 599 cellphone from China. I can’t help but wonder whether the naming convention has anything to do with the 8GB iPhone’s price. Nevertheless, the Cect 599 comes with a 3.2″ WQVGA touchscreen display at 240 x 400 resolution, Bluetooth connectivity, dual speakers, and a 1.3 megapixel camera, all packed into a body that weighs a mere 90 grams. It lacks internal memory of any kind, but thankfully there is a microSD memory card slot to cover up for its weaknesses. The Cect 599 isn’t too big on features though, as video playback is restricted to just 176 x 144 pixels. At $150 a pop (unlocked), I’m not sure if you want to pick one up the next time you go for a holiday there.

The Clever machine is eco-friendly

The Clever machine is eco-friendly

With rising gas prices and the automotive industry having a hard time meeting all those environmental regulations, it makes us wonder whether we can afford personal modes of transport in the future. The Clever is one such vehicle that could help in the future, featuring a trio of wheels that holds up to 2 passengers at most, emitting less than 50% of the CO2 emissions found in the most efficient cars of today. The designers think that the final Clever vehicle will retail for approximately $13,000 when it hits the streets within the next four years. Assuming inflation has been taken into account, would you pick one up at that price point to get around while doing your part for the environment?

Cect K898 from China slides open

Cect K898 from China slides open

The Cect K898 cellphone from China is certainly very different from other standard clamshell or candybar handsets, as it takes the sliding form factor with a twistable camera module thrown into the mix. This will most probably be a 3G-enabled handset as there is a secondary camera which is used for video calls. Looks like cellphone manufacturers are learning fast and getting the game together, and while their hardware might almost be up to par with the established players, they still have a long way to go when it comes to the user interface which is by far less satisfactory, and convoluted even.

Magnetic Display tech in the works

Magnetic Display tech in the worksResearchers located at the University of California have developed a new display technology that involves plastic-coated iron oxide particles that are filled with liquid. These highly charged particles will repel each other and arrange themselves (in a more organized manner than schoolchildren) in a structure known as the colloidal photonic crystal. Individual particles will then end up as a pixel that represents a unique color, and can be controlled by a magnet located just behind. Researchers have created a range of colors with this technology with the long term goal of creating larger displays that are cheaper than current LCDs. Other perks include being highly visible outdoors and the ability to be used as a rewritable electronic paper.
