A Belgian Shepherd known as Storm lays claim to be the first pet in the world to be fitted with a prosthetic paw. This false limb is different from the rest since it allows the dog’s skin to grow into the metal itself for greater grip. This is a first step that acts as a model for future human amputees, providing a semblance of hope for those suffering from missing limbs. Such an advancement is especially neat, and if it could be merged with the bionic hand we looked at earlier today, the implications are enormous as more and more people enter the Six Million Dollar Man fold. Suddenly, $6,000,000 doesn’t sound like a lot in this day and age - I wonder if we could revise his nickname to take into account inflation?

Looks like we now have more information on the TiVo Series 3 Lite DVR, enabling users to record high definition images along with TiVo’s unbelievably simple user interface at a pocket-friendly price. It will probably retail in the region of $299 and features both MPEG 2 and MPEG 4 decoders and a 160GB hard drive (bummer), minus the OLED display and a lack of THX certification that came with the pricier Series 3. The 160GB hard drive can store up to 180 hours of standard definition video, but if you’re more keen on high definition, that amounts to just 20 hours. Still, at such an attractive price point, chances are no one will complain.

BigBelly has enlisted the help of all natural and clean solar power to move its innards when it comes to compacting trash. On the outside, the BigBelly resembles an ordinary looking trash can, but it is capable of holding anywhere between 4 to 6 times as much trash as standard units. Not only that, the BigBelly is less prone to overflows which results in less food for birds to pick on, alternatively leading to less bird droppings (car owners shout “Huzzah!”). The BigBelly solar-powered trash compactor has been around for some time now, and can be installed virtually anywhere but will see greatest benefits in public places. A single unit retails for $4,000 but it sure is more cost-effective and environmentally friendly when compared to a standard system, paying for itself over its lifetime. Does you city already has this installed?

Getting a heart attack is something many people fear, and what’s worse is if you experience one when you’re all alone. This Bluetooth Heart Monitor could potentially help save lives, offering the ability to send an alert along with an ECG readout via a text message to the relevant health authorities. The prototype currently records an ECG periodically and sends the information to the patient’s cellphone via radio frequency. The modified handset comes with an analyzer circuit that checks out the ECG signals for any sign of imminent cardiac failure. Future revisions will include the incorporation of GPS so that hospitals will be able to reach the patient as soon as possible. The most important lesson to learn from all this? Make sure your handset has enough juice (and credit for those on pre-paid plans). Oh yeah, a healthy diet, plenty of exercise, and tons of laughter will go a long way in preventing heart attacks as well.

Shimadzu from Japan has developed the DataGlass Head-Mounted Video display that can be connected to a notebook or video output via USB, virtually giving you the experience of having a 14″ monitor right in front of you from a distance of 2 feet. This wearable display is meant for industrial users who often find themselves in situations where they need to access small, wearable computers under a wide range of weather conditions. This is dust- and water-proof to cater for the more extreme operating environments it is expected to experience. One thing’s for sure though - the chick modeling this sure doesn’t look as though she’s heading anywhere outside of her cozy air-conditioned office anytime soon. The DataGlass HMD is currently priced at $1,636 a pop.

Is there nothing sacred that has not yet fallen to the scourge known as Hello Kitty? Apparently, gadgets and electronic items seem to bear the brunt of the punishment, and this hand-crank generator being the latest in line to receive the Hello Kitty endorsement. Should you actually feel tired from turning the crank, there is always a 9V battery port that helps power all the other functions. There is a compass to help you find the True North under all circumstances, a cable to juice up your cellphone, an LED flashlight, an emergency alarm to attract the attention rescue workers in a disaster, and the rudimentary AM/FM radio to keep you entertained while you lie trapped under ceiling beams amidst the rubble you once called home.

If you as a parent are fearful of stories floating about where kids go missing the moment you take your eyes off them, the people-buddi GPS system ought to be a must-buy. Combining both GPS and GSM technology, it notifies a network of your current location at preset intervals. Whoever wants to know where you are can just contact the company’s customer support line and view it over an interactive map. The people-buddi retails for approximately $600 and comes with a $40 monthly service fee. Cheating spouses, beware! Your wife might just slip this into your briefcase without your knowledge, and she could well catch you with your pants down (literally) the next time you tell her you’ve got to finish up some work at a ‘friend’s’ place.

Most weeks end with a whole ton of stress on the shoulders of breadwinners, and what better way than to unwind throughout the weekend, doing nothing but having a good rest instead. The HiVox Stress Relieving Wrist Band helps keep you feeling relaxed througout the week, utilizing biofeedback techniques to improve your sleep time and quality. While some others might think that reading an old history textbook will do the same, those who want the high tech route can fork out $79.95 for one of these. The HiVox Stress Relieving Wrist Band apparently massages and stimulates pressure points that dot your inner left wrist gently, giving you the acupunture effect minus the needles. Any takers for this device?
