In the 40 years that humans have been traveling into space, the suits they wear have changed very little. The bulky, gas-pressurized outfits give astronauts a bubble of protection, but their significant mass and the pressure itself severely limit mobility.Dava Newman, a professor of aeronautics and astronautics and engineering systems at MIT, wants to change that.Newman’s prototype suit is a revolutionary departure from the traditional model. Instead of using gas pressurization, which exerts a force on the astronaut’s body to protect it from the vacuum of space, the suit relies on mechanical counter-pressure, which involves wrapping tight layers of material around the body. The trick is to make a suit that is skintight but stretches with the body, allowing freedom of movement.http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2007/biosuit-0716.htmlSource: http://www.slashdot.org

Synchronica announced that Mobile Gateway 3.0 supports over-the-air synchronization between Microsoft Exchange and Apple iPhone. Mobile Gateway uses Microsoft’s secure Outlook Web Access (OWA) to retrieve email from the corporate Exchange server, a service enabled by many enterprises to provide users with access to corporate email from home or while traveling.Unlike other solutions so far, Mobile Gateway 3.0 delivers emails directly to the built-in email client of the Apple iPhone. Users will be able to benefit from the outstanding user experience of the built-in email client of the iPhone and its tight integration with the phone’s address book. Now mobile operators and service providers can offer mobile synchronization to business users and prosumers, enabling them to receive corporate email on their iPhones without having to ask their IT manager to open the firewall or install additional software.http://www.synchronica.com/

From ars tecnhica:The Zune may not be the most popular portable media player, but you wouldn’t know it based on the game of cat and mouse that has been going on for nearly a year between Microsoft and “hackers” who have continually found ways to defeat Microsoft’s DRM. Ars Technica has been able to confirm that the latest attacks on Microsoft’s Windows Media DRM work as proclaimed. Via an update of the Individualized Blackbox component (IBX), FairUse4WM can now remove DRM for Microsoft IBX versions 11.0.6000.6324 and earlier, on both XP and Vista. The release of the update was first announced on the Doom9 forums, where user ‘Divine Tao’ indicated that he found a way to update FairUse4WM to support new keys (v1.3 Fix2). It would appear as though ‘Divine Tao’ is not working with the same hacker(s) who broke the Windows Media DRM code last summer, as the user says that access to the FairUse4WM source code is not possible for him or her. (’Divine Tao’ is an anagram of ‘viodentia,’ however, which is suspicious.)Continue reading on ars technica…

Nike might have collaborated with Apple to come up with the Nike+iPod kit, but Yamaha hopes to carve a niche for itself in the fitness market with the BODiBEAT device. Touted to be the first music playback device in the world that synchronizes your music to the movement of your workout, the BODiBEAT comes in the shape of an armband that remains securely in place even under the most strenous of situations. Built-in sensors will be able to detect the speed of your current workout for example, increasing or reducing the tempo based on your movement. This works great to maintain your current momentum, while giving you a chance to relax when you slow down. Yamaha’s BODiBEAT will be available later this summer. Best of all is, you don’t need to purchase special shoes to use this, saving a handsome amount of dough in the process.

This Transformers movie certainly takes top spot for the best movie this summer (in my books at least) so far, and it is nice to spend idle minutes at the office wondering just how the stuff all around you would look like if they were to receive a breath of digital life from the Allspark. This standard clamshell handset has been given the concept Transformers treatment, turning into a bipedal robot complete with mini chainguns that are menacing. It kinda reminds me of the ED-209 robot from Robocop. Guess cellphone companies ought to incorporate this “transformation” into their future handsets to threaten customers should they fail to settle the monthly phone bill.

If you’re looking for a way to soup up your computer aesthetically, the Zalman ZM-MFC2 does a pretty good job when placed inside your 5.25″ drive bay. It monitors your computer’s temperature and comes with a fan speed controller and a meter that displays just how much juice your computer is consuming right now. In fact, you can even get heat readings of four different spots in your computer case just to impress people around you. The Zalman ZM-MFC2 will retail for $69 and is a great addition for computer enthusiasts who love to have total control over every single aspect of their system. Ordinary users need not worry themselves sick about overheating issues as the standard fan does just fine (assuming you don’t delve into overclocking that is).

Setting up your own home theater system is a challenge for the average Joe, as it requires a whole load of equipment and cables in addition to a keen mind. Epson decided to do away with second guessing of just which port the cable is suppose to connect to with its Epson Ensemble Home Cinema system. This setup comes with everything you need out of the box, so you won’t have to rush back to the store to get a missing cable. It includes a 100″ motorized display, a 5.1 surround sound system, an AV controller with dual HDMI inputs and 1080p upconversion, and an integrated progressive scan controller in addition to all the necessary cables. The Ensemble Home Cinema System will hit retail stores this November, with the 1080p and 720p versions retailing for approximately $7,000 and $5,000 respectively.

Having a large vehicle that guzzles up fuel like there’s no tomorrow might be a sign of affluence to people, but ranks as foolishness to nature. The Sunforce 60W solar charger helps alleviate some of your guilt as it is capable of charging a 12V battery and comes with a 175W inverter for you to power a portable coffee maker or TV whenever you’ve ventured into the great outdoors. The Sunforce measures 54″ x 42″ X 12″ and weighs in at 60 lbs., making it rather hefty to transport around (while consuming even more fuel when you’re carrying something so heavy). If you’re keen on some clean portable electricity, be prepared to pony up $400 for one of these.
