Roboticists create Runbot

Roboticists create RunbotThe Runbot holds the distinction of being the world’s fastest walking robot. Built around the theories of Nikolai Bernstein, the Runbot is a tiny biped robot that moves at speeds of more than three leg lengths in a single second - a wee bit behind the fastest walking human. The entire movement was under control of local circuits and not the brain, using information received by peripheral sensors on the joints and feet of the robot in addition to an accelerometer. Local neural loops will analyze these data, making subtle adjustments to the gait of the robot in real time, enabling it to maintain its balance and walk without toppling over. Guess the day is fast approaching where robots are our equal physically.

Hotel Door Security Alarm

Hotel Door Security AlarmJust in case you have a boss who loves skimp when it comes to traveling, you had better carry less valuables on your road trips lest the cockroach infested motel he put you up in doesn’t come with ample security. For dire times such as those, remember to pack up the Hotel Door Security Alarm that emits a banshee-rivaling 105db of noise whenever somebody touches the doorknob on the outside. This definitely goes down well with the “Do Not Disturb” sign, giving you some much needed peace of mind. I sure pity the hotel maids who accidentally touch the doorknob without knowing any better though. The Hotel Door Security Alarm can be yours for $36.

Pentax unveils new Optios

Pentax unveils new Optios

Pentax has introduced a couple more Optio digital cameras in the form of the Optio M40 and the Optio E40. Both cameras come with 8 megapixel sensors and 3x optical zoom, face recognition for better portrait shots, and digital shake reduction to capture crystal clear images even when you’re having the jitters. The former boasts an extremely slim aluminum alloy body and a 2.5″ TFT color LCD display, while the latter targets the entry-level crowd that truly believes in the term “point-and-shoot”, where pressing the capture button will automatically cause the camera to snap a picture after adjusting the exposure, sensitivity, white balance, and other settings according to the shooting environment automatically.

Roller Lights are annoying

Roller Lights are annoying

Remember the Heelys craze a few years back? Boy were those annoying, with kids zipping about in public being a general nuinsance. Unfortunately, that concept has second life with the introduction of Roller Lights. Shoes equipped with these spinning LED lights is now a possibility - all the poor, beleaguered parent needs to do is fork out £12.95 for one of these and retro-fit them into a pair of sneakers. I’m sure all the tiny terrors will clamor for one the moment the coolest kid in class straps on his. With the Roller Lights, you get small children rolling about in public on their sneakers while blinding us all with distracting LED pulses.

Logitech launches MX Air Cordless Mouse

Logitech launches MX Air Cordless Mouse

The Logitech MX Air is designed for users who use their computers as a Media Center. I’m one of them and I know how frustrating it is when I (inevitably) have to use the mouse while I’m in the couch: get up, crouch in front of the TV table, do something, sit down… it didn’t work, get up…

To make a long story short, the MX Air is a mouse that users hold like a remote and strangely enough, it works just like you would imagine it should – we tried it, although only for a few minutes. Users can also use the buttons, or gestures to control things like play, pause, volume, mute… it’s cool.

The design is particularly attractive. At the moment, there’s only one color scheme: shiny-black and silver. More colors might be added if the product becomes a commercial success. If you’re watching a movie in a dark room, you’ll appreciate the fact that the orange lights fade off when the remote isn’t used.

Gyration can worry for their Optical Air Mouse, there’s a new sheriff in town that has an intuitive and beautiful design. We always said it: good design sells. Maximum suggested price for the MX Air: $149.99. This mouse should pop on the Logitech website anytime now.

Bionic legs help man regain pride

Bionic legs help man regain prideMr. Peng Shulin from China tragically had his lower body cut off in a truck accident last year, but he is now up and “walking” thanks to the implementation of a pair of bionic legs. The egg cup-like casing holds his body in place, while the bionic legs help him get around with the help of a resized walking frame. He’s also got a pretty spiffy pair of Adidas shoes to boot. Hopefully inventions and developments in modern medical science will be able to see more and more disabled people regain their mobility, but the society around also has to work together in order to make our surroundings disabled friendly.

Etymotic Ety8s Bluetooth headphones

Etymotic Ety8s Bluetooth headphones

Wired headphones might offer great sound, but unfortunately wires and cables tend to have a life of their own, getting all tangled out whenever you’re not looking. Etymotic Research has come up with the Ety8s Bluetooth headphones which are a world’s first for a pair of in-ear wireless Bluetooth headphones. Tipping the scales at just 0.5 ounces each, the Ety8s are touted to deliver sound that is close to actual ear response. A full battery charge lasts up to 10 hours at best, making these suitable for long haul flights and sessions at the gym. The Ety8s headphones are also iPod compatible (4G and 5G iPods, mini, and nano), in addition to providing support for other Bluetooth-enabled computer or cellphone. The asking price of $400 could throw some people off the track though.

Lapworks unveil Laptop Desk Futura Anyone who has worked with a laptop long enough knows exactly how hot the base gets in non-air conditioned rooms, and the Lapworks Laptop Desk Futura was released to prevent this from happening. While its primary use is meant to be placed over your lap, the Laptop Desk Futura can also be placed on a desk to keep things running cool. Strategically positioned ventilation slots dissipate heat naturally without consuming additional power. Daurmouse Mini not the norm

Daurmouse Mini not the normIf there ever was a mouse that did not take the conventional route when it comes to design, the Darumouse Mini would be it. It is custom made to order and hand painted, so you can be sure that there won’t be two of the same kind in the world. Features include 4 buttons as well as tilt control, making it more like a giant knob than a pointing peripheral. If you need the pointed to move up, just tilt the Darumouse forward, and vice versa to backtrack. No idea on how much more convenient and efficient this thing is going to be in the office, but it sure is interesting to look at. The Darumouse Mini retails for $77 a pop after conversion.
