Rumor of Dell tablet surface

Rumor of Dell tablet surfaceCould Dell be working on a UMPC that is based on the Latitude line of specifications minus the keyboard? Just in case you’re wondering, the tablet PC form factor hasn’t exactly taken off like a rocket, forming an extremely niche community. It would be interesting to see if Dell would actually adopt a stylus-based UMPC and place them alongside their standard notebooks which has long been their bread and butter for many a year. Perhaps it would be safer for Dell to just rebadge an OEM model while offering the legendary support they’re famous for. I remember a friend telling me once, “How I wish I could buy a Mac and obtain the same kind of service and support that Dell offers.” As with any other rumor, time will tell.

Belkin launches N1 ExpressCard adapter

Belkin launches N1 ExpressCard adapterBelkin has just announced the N1 ExpressCard wireless adapter, bringing 802.11n wireless connectivity to those whose notebooks have the ExpressCard slot. While this rules out those who still own machines with PCMCIA slots, at least you can pack the power of N-wireless standard wherever you go instead of the much slower 802.11b/g standards. Taking the 34mm format route, the Belkin N1 ExpressCard offers data transfer speeds of up to 300Mbps and comes with performance indicators that make it easy to monitor no matter where you are. It will cost £69.99 after taxes for the Belkin N1 ExpressCard adapter.

Nissan helps you stop

Nissan helps you stopUnless you live with a devil-may-care atittude, anyone with half a brain would know to hit the brakes the moment they see a Stop sign. Nissan, of course, decided to do their part in road safety by offering a system that monitors road traffic warnings, giving the driver different levels of feedback just in case they aren’t responding appropriately. No word on these varying levels of feedback, although they could mean a vocal warning or perhaps extra resistance to the accelerator pedal. In addition, a cellphone link hooks you up to real-time updates on traffic and road conditions. This safety system will appear in their line of luxury cars first (no surprises here) before economical saloons get their turn. This just lifts more responsibility off the driver - a sign that our driving tests need to be revamped.

Mother of all touchscreen PCs

Mother of all touchscreen PCs

If you though your 17″ touchscreen PC is the bomb, think again. GPNC from Korea has just unveiled a monster for touchscreen PC enthusiasts, sitting pretty on top of the pile with 70″ of viewing real estate. Meant for commercial use (I wonder who would’ve thought otherwise), this behemoth will feature full High Definition resolution of 1080p, a contrast ratio of 8,000 to 1, a response time of 8ms, and a brightness level of 700cd/m2. No word on pricing or availability, but at least you can now view all your Windows error messages in 70″ glory.

BJ robotic dog

BJ robotic dog

Robot dogs these days seem to be experiencing a resurgence, and the BJ dog robot is yet another addition to a growing list of electronic pups. BJ runs on Linux, so you won’t have him freeze up all too often, playing dead for real as there won’t be any Windows running inside. For those who want to take care of an electronic pooch without the hassle of sending it to the vet for jabs, bathing it, and even cleaning up after its poo, the price of such convenience would be $4,900. Then again, it won’t do much good when there’s a thief trying to break into your home. Give me a Rotty over the BJ any day.

iRiver Clix gets bumped to 8GB

iRiver Clix gets bumped to 8GBLooks like those waiting for the iRiver Clix will be pleased to know that it will come with 8GB of memory when it arrives Stateside sometime this August after a long and agonizing wait. The iRiver Clix is certainly a viable alternative to those who plan to shun the iPod for their own personal reason, and it does look pretty sweet to boot. Looks like the Koreans will be getting theirs this week, so for those of you who can’t wait to get one, you’ll have to head towards your nearest import store. You certainly can’t fault iRiver with the design of this though no matter how hard you try.

Kwikset SmartScan does away with keys

Kwikset SmartScan does away with keys

For those who love living a keyless lifestyle, there is the Kwikset SmartScan that uses a biometric scanning door opening solution instead. This is great for those who suffer from memory lapses that cause them to forget their house keys as well. All you need to do is swipe the appropriate digit and an “Open Sesame” will be performed. Of course, the SmartScan holds more than a single biometric signature, so you can assign the entire family while keeping annoying relatives out. Hopefully power failures and brownouts will be rare and fare between, else you’ll need to use the manual override to get into your home. The Kwikset SmartScan retails for $200 a pop.

Duofone concept loves sharing

Duofone concept loves sharing

All cellphones that we’ve seen to date are pretty much loners, and they hardly interact with one another save for transferring the odd media file or two on occasion. The Duofone concept from Daewoo Kim is different, featuring similar form factors that enable you to hook up thwo handsets together to synergize. Imagine requiring more display area - just connect it to your sweetheart’s Duofone and you’re good to go. One person low on battery? Share the power then by balancing it out. Heck, even when they’re both docked in a charging cradle, they both look blissfully married. Too bad you can’t have this osmosis-like relationship when it comes to paying the monthly bill…

TEAC MP-600 with touchscreen

TEAC MP-600 with touchscreenTouchscreen products seem to be big these days, and the TEAC MP-600 takes a similar route. Targeting the entry level portable media market with low amounts of memory (1GB, 2GB, and 4GB capacities), the MP-600 does boast an SD/MMC memory card slot for expansion options. It supports the most basic file formats, including MP3, WMA, WMA DRM, AVI, XviD, and JPEG - which should be more than enough for the casual user. Additional features include an equalizer, an integrated FM radio, recording functions, e-book support, and a cloned Tetris game. Battery life stands at 10 hours for audio, and 5.5 for video.
