Tiny generator developed by scientists

Tiny generator developed by scientistsScientists at the University of Southhampton have successfully developed a minuscule generator that powers devices in lieu of batteries, especially in cases where a battery replacement procedure is next to impossible. It will first be tested on wireless sensors before being moved into more important areas such as powering heart pacemakers. According to test results, this new generator is 10 times more efficient than similar devices, despite measuring less than a cubic centimeter in size. It works by utilizing vibrations around it to make magnets on a cantilever in the confines of the device to wobble, and thus generating power. Guess this would make a great self-powered medical implant if the need ever arises.

Apple files new patent for mouse

Apple files new patent for mouse

Apple has just filed a patent that describes a computer mouse possessing a touch-sensitive shell which is capable of accepting multi-touch finger gestures that we have recently seen in the iPhone. This makes the mouse yet another avenue to input commands in a different manner instead of regular clicking that everyone is accustomed to. Filed in March last year, I wonder when will such technology actually surface in the next iteration of an Apple mouse. All I can say is, it is refreshing to see companies try to innovate what everyone has deemed to be “the wheel”. It would be interesting waiting for the final product that uses such technology.

Sonic Chair envelopes listeners

Sonic Chair envelopes listenersThe Sonic Chair is one piece of home furniture that will definitely sit down well (no pun intended) with audiophiles. This pod-like seat was designed in such a manner to isolate its occupant in a personal sound space, minimizing any aural spillover into the surrounding. The chair’s speakers have been built into the bowl, giving the person sitting inside a concentrated dose of bass and acoustics without disturbing the peace around. Line-level inputs are used to hook up to other audio sources. It can be further customized by throwing in a touchscreen controller or an iPod dock in lieu of the swiveling drink tray. Be prepared to dig deep though, as the Sonic Chair retails for approximately $8,000.

Belkin unveils new USB hub

Belkin unveils new USB hub

Having four USB ports in your notebook or computer these days just don’t quite make the cut, which is why Belkin has come up with a 7-port USB hub for Koreans. It will use High Speed USB 2.0 connectivity for file and data transfer purposes, and has been designed in such a way where two of those ports are located on top of the hub, making it much easier for users to plug in USB memory and perhaps even a USB-powered light instead of huddling all of them together in a bunch. Pricing details are unavailable, but it sure looks more suitable for notebook use instead of desktops.

Nokia HF-300 Bluetooth speakerphone

Nokia HF-300 Bluetooth speakerphoneNokia has just unveiled the HF-300 speakerphone that was specially designed for those who hit the road frequently, as evident by the sun visor clip that mounts it above your head complete with a battery to eliminate the need for a car charger. You can also place the HF-300 on the dashboard or desk, since its rubber feet prevent it from slipping all too easily. The Nokia HF-300 boasts up to 20 hours of continuous talktime, preserving energy by turning itself off after 5 minutes without a Bluetooth connection. Look out for the HF-300 sometime this summer for $123 a pop.

Energy Saving Adapters concept

Energy Saving Adapters concept

Saving energy is big these days, and Gilles Belles have drawn up an interesting concept in the Energy Saving Adapter. Consisting of different modules, each module works with a single device, monitoring its power consumption independently. While standby mode is a good idea, you still take up around 10% of electricity in that mode. The Energy Saving Adapters will detect this waste and notify the owner by displaying a corresponding symbol. If you fail to respond within three minutes, the device will automatically be turned off. While this idea works great with most other items, I fear that it does not bode well for notebooks and PCs that have gone into standby mode. There might still be unsaved data in there, not to mention the possible data corruption when power is cut off suddenly.

Nandemo Microscope does the gross

Nandemo Microscope does the gross

Ever wondered what your body looks like up close? Thanko has just unveiled the Nandemo Microscope that comes with a quartet of separate attachments. The standard attachment works like any other microscope, while other attachments help you perform oral exams, check the inside of ears, while getting a close-up look on your skin and hair. The last three are pretty gross in my opinion, but it would probably thrill kids as they explore those orifices. The Nandemo Microscope is equipped with a 1.3 megapixel CMOS sensor, VGA resolution, and adjustable LED lighting. The Thanko Nandemo Microscope is USB powered and retails for a shade above $100.
