So Ken is finally leaving the mother ship. Sad news for the father of the best selling gaming console ever, the Sony’s PlayStation and followings (2 and 3). I guess that after the expected titanesque failure of the PS3 game console, some heads at Sony had to roll. Unfortunately, Kutaragi’s public apologies earlier this year did not suffice to save his. Will miss you at the E3 parties, Ken! More on our sister site UberPulse.

Just when you thought UMPCs were nothing more than tiny versions of their notebook brethren, the Ruggedbook comes along. This tough nut of an UMPC does not only perform all the other standard stuff that UMPCs do, it also features GPS capability if you slot in a GPS module via the PCMCIA slot. I know, I had the same bewildered look as well - who makes PCMCIA GPS receivers these days anyway? What you have out there are most probably legacy devices by now, so support is going to be an issue. Other specifications of the Ruggedbook ain’t too shappy, featuring a 7″ TFT LCD touchscreen display at 800 x 480 resolution, a 1.3GHz Via processor, 512MB RAM, a built-in CF card with the option to throw in a 1.8″ hard drive, WiFi connectivity, a CMOS camera, and an SD/MMC memory card slot, all running on Windows XP. No word on pricing though.

Felix Schmidberger has recently unveiled the Compenion concept design for a portable computer, boasting a couple of sliding OLED touchscreens that can be worked with directly, although the power required for two displays will definitely be an issue, especially when you’re engrossed in a marathon session of work without a power outlet nearby. Whenever the top screen slides up, the OLED keyboard will be illuminated for ease-of-use under low light conditions. Although there now aren’t any nooks or crannies to vacuum cookie crumbs from, I won’t be too comfortable with it’s lack of tactile feedback which is important where typing is involved.
