There are folks who just don’t know when to quit, receving calls on their cellphones every other minute as if they were the President. The Cell Phoney device will definitely drive such people crazy - all you need to do is press one of the half dozen buttons and it will play back some of the most popular ringtones, although I strongly suspect that this supports only monotones and polyphonic ringtones at best. Too bad the Cell Phoney did not make its way out much earlier in the later part of the last decade, since those were the heydays of monotones and the advent of polyphonic ringtones. With MP3 ringtones being used by all and sundry these days, the Cell Phoney strictly remains a Third World April Fool’s prank device. You can pick it up for $9.99 if you want to see what it is all about.

Developing countries often experience disasters such as recurring floods, which is why designer Robert Nightingale came up with the Water Shelter project that responds to such situations, focusing more in the geographical region of the Zambezi basin in Sub-Saharan Africa. This design makes it easy for the user to move around at a moment’s notice, boasting all the necessary tools and information that promotes self-sufficiency no matter what stage of the disaster is. In addition, the design addresses shelter, drinking water, product transport and information needs in a single device, making this a potential life saver in many situations. Good to see some altruistic designs coming out instead of those that do nothing but glorify the excesses of capitalism.

Looks like the future is here, with a robot standing in as the Master of Ceremonies (MC) at a wedding in South Korea - making this most likely the first wedding in the world to do so. Tiro the robot will be assisting the civil wedding ceremony for Seok Gyeong-Jae, one of his design engineers. Once his task is complete, he will be given an upgrade to perform other tasks - although should this idea catch on, Tiro might remain a robotic MC for quite some time to come since weddings these days have evolved into a whole new ball game, where money speaks. Tiro is valued at $251,000, speaking in a sweet, female voice that will surely charm the crowd.
