DXG releases budget 7.1MP camera

DXG releases budget 7.1MP camera

Evolution and progress has brought the number of megapixels to consumer class digital cameras to double digits, and these are certainly priced the same to early 2 megapixel cameras of yore. DXG from U.S. has recently unveiled the DXG-711 digital camera that boasts a whopping 7.1 megapixels, retailing for a dirt cheap $149.99. The features aren’t something worth trumpeting over as it shares pretty much what its brethren in the market already have - a 2.5″ display, 3x optical zoom, preset modes, 32MB of integrated memory, a voice recorder, and video recording capability, all packed into a body measuring less than an inch thick. The design could do with some work though.

Cup to reduce scalding incidents

Cup to reduce scalding incidents

There is nothing quite like a sipping on a hot cup of joe in the morning, but unfortunately our lives are too rushed to the extent where we have to pack our coffee to go, and in the midst of it sometimes we end up scalding ourselves. Smart Lid Systems have decided to reduce the number of scalding incidents by developing a special lid that comes with a warning and sealing indicator, showing you whether the lid is properly sealed or not. The external lid color also changes as the beverage inside cools down, letting you know when is it relatively safe to take more than a sip. Sounds more like a novelty than a necessary evil to me. After all, having these lids with each purchase will do nothing but drive up the average price of my coffee - and that’s something I dread to see.

Grundig offers new MPixx MP4 players

Grundig offers new MPixx MP4 playersGrundig has signaled its intention to be a serious player in the low capacity portable media player market by releasing the MPixx 2001 FM and 2002 FM, where the former comes with a 1GB capacity while the latter takes in more songs with double the memory. Features include a 1.8″ TFT LCD 65k color display, an integrated FM radio, a voice recorder, as well as support for MP3, WMA (DRM), WAV, SMV, and MPEG 4 formats. The 1GB and 2GB models will retail for €79 and €89 respectively. It would have been nice to see Grundig throw in a memory card slot of some kind to expand upon the 2GB model, since that space is nigh laughable in this day and age. Which kind of player do you prefer? The one with a large capacity where housekeeping needs to be done on a monthly basis, or a low capacity version that requires constant renewal of your playlist?

Fire-safe cigarretes in Europe

Fire-safe cigarretes in EuropeOver the years, there has been more than a single fire that started by a smoker who’s fallen asleep with a lighted cigarette in hand. Europe ought to see the last of this ‘unforseen disaster’ should the newly developed “fire-safe” cigarettes take off in a big way. These cancer sticks were designed in such a way that they automatically extinguish themselves a minute or two without being smoked. Sounds pretty dubious to me - after all, it takes less than a minute for an unattended cigarette to start a fire. In the first place, how does one fall asleep while smoking halfway?

Aigo GPS-P370 unveiled at CHITEC 2007

Aigo GPS-P370 unveiled at CHITEC 2007

Aigo has just lifted the curtain on its latest GPS navigation system known as the GPS-P370. This device comes with fairly standard features, ranging from a 3.5″ touchscreen LCD display to the SiRFStar III GPS chipset. What surprises me would be the brains behind the device - the GPS-P370 is actually powered by an ancient Freescale Dragonball 266MHz processor, something we won’t see in devices these days. Other features include 64MB of internal memory and an SD/MMC memory card slot for maps and storage purposes. The Aigo GPS-P370 measures 120mm x 87mm x 21.5mm and is runs off a 1300mAh battery. There is no word on whether this will make it to the U.S. or Europe.

QiGO tries out new marketing idea

QiGO tries out new marketing ideaMarketing is an interesting segment of any business, and some of the ideas have ranged from been downright dumb to simply effective. QiGO is taking a stab at marketing by unveiling an USB device that will be able to launch any Internet content which the marketers want you to view automatically the moment it is plugged in. In addition, the key grips are also capable of morphing into any logo of your choice, with imagination being the only limit. Imagine having a rock band release this marketing tool as a pre-cursor to their new CD, giving fans a preview while generating buzz. simultaneously. These QiGO-inspired marketing tools will be available when fall rolls around, giving you tons of time to think what content you’re going to throw in. Do you think this will take off? Having intrusive ads pop up automatically could pose a security risk, so I’ll probably be giving this a pass.

Talking Mirror Butler animatron

Talking Mirror Butler animatronRemember the Magic Mirror from Snow White and the Seven Dwarves? The Talking Mirror Butler animatron is pretty much the same thing, except it is no longer confined to the realms of our imagination. It looks like an ordinary from afar, and the butler will only be activated when the integrated driveway sensor notifies the mirror of an approaching visitor. The butler will then be more than ready to dish out a few words of warm welcome as well as offer his assistance to the astonished visitors. The Talking Mirror Butler boasts approximately 133 lines of speech in an uppity British accent for an authentic butler experience. When it is not entertaining anyone, the Talking Mirror Butler fades into a surveillance camera through an animated dream sequence.

Concept House-Off Switch

Concept House-Off Switch

Ever left the home only to have that nagging feeling that you did not turn off all the switches? The House-Off Switch concept, should it be realized, would definitely put to rest all these fears as it functions as the central switch for the entire home. Unfortunately, I seriously doubt this idea will take off since you will need certain appliances to keep running even when you’re out of the home, such as security cameras, the all important refrigerator, and even garden lamps that turn on automatically in the evening. Apparently designer Jack Godfrey Wood shares the same sentiment as me, and has included a more expensive version of the same concept by making an allowance for appliances plugged into ’safe’ sockets that won’t be affected by the House-Off Switch’s status.

Aiptek HD Video Recorder

Aiptek HD Video Recorder High Definition still remains the Holy Grail for most people due to the high costs of entry despite some rather steep price drops over the years. Aiptek is jumping onto the High Definition bandwagon by offering the HD Video Recorder that immortalizes your favorite memories in 720p glory. Features are pretty average though, with a 3x optical zoom, an SD memory card slot which stores up to 4 hours of video on an 8GB SD card), and a 5 megapixel camera. At $299 a pop, it is certainly worth mulling over if you’re considering getting a new video camcorder. Anyway, just remember to get a HD-ready TV if you want to take full advantage of recording all your video in High Definition.

Netgear shows Digital Living Room at Lunch 2.0 BBQ!

Today was our first lunch i.e. as in lunch 2.0. This time it was hosted by networking company Netgear. The next one will be at Web 2.0 start-up Ning. The food/BBQ was okay and it was great to reconnect in a relax environment with some familiar faces both from Netgear and elsewhere, like Techmeme’s founder Abe and Uber-socialite Jeremy Pepper from rich PR-firm Weber Shandwick. More on our sister site UberPulse.
