NHK of Japan asks - 1080p who?

NHK of Japan asks - 1080p who?

If you think that HD broadcast programmes look spiffy, think again. NHK from Japan recently demonstrated their Super Hi-Vision (SHV) system that boasts a superior 4,320 horizontal and 7,680 vertical lines, making your full HD movies look like standard definition. This means a single SHV image is equal to 16 tiled HDTV displays. Don’t fret though - SHV systems won’t be available as a working broadcast standard just yet, not at least within the next 5 years anyway. Anything beyond that is hard to tell, especially when NHK already developed High Definition back in 1969.

Have you made the jump to SSDs yet, or are you still relying on traditional hard drives as your choice of storage device?

LEGO Chaingun shoots rubberbands

LEGO Chaingun shoots rubberbandsHere’s a pretty interesting invention created by using bits and pieces of LEGO, resulting in a chaingun that uses rubber bands as its ammunition of choice. The motor driven barrels require a short wind up time when you turn it on, and pulling the trigger will introduce your target to a world of pain. Fire rate stands at a minimum of 6 bands in the air at any one time, making the LEGO chaingun look as if its firing a single long chain. The LEGO chaingun boasts eight barrels and a 64-shot capacity. I have a feeling that reloading this will be a pain if you need to place each rubber band individually.

Blockbuster, Netflix are “history”, says Sun’s co-founder

With its new ultra-fast video server, Sun plans to revolutionise the IP TV world and by the same token, put Blockbuster and Netflix out of business, said Andy Bechtolsheim, Sun’s co-founder and Google’s early investor. Subscribers to service providers, most likely telecom operators, using the Sun Fire x4950 server will be able to access all the catalogue of movies Hollywood produced so far, if they eventually open up their kimono, that is! Check out Andy “B”’s video on our sister publication UberPulse.com.

Wayward Wiimotes reined in

Wayward Wiimotes reined inPlaying with the Nintendo Wii often elicits more excitement than usual, and sometimes the flailing of arms could result in a flying Wiimote embedding itself into the TV’s display or hit a person in the eye by accident. Elecom has taken steps to remedy this by offering a silicon protective skin for the Wiimote that comes with a rubbery surface for greater grip (especially those with sweaty palms), while a handle is located behind to prevent the Wiimote from taking flight. Do you think this is a better idea than using the included wrist straps that come with each Wiimote?

Day System dual-function display

Day System dual-function display

For newlyweds who are trying to make ends meet in a crammed apartment will have a hard time deciding on the essential home appliances and furniture. Granted, the bedroom and living room will definitely get the bulk of attention, so choosing between a TV and a monitor (especially if either party is a geek) could be a difficult choice. Day System hopes to quell your pre-marital jitters with the 23″ widescreen DAY232TP LCD display which can be used as either a monitor or a TV, thanks to the WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200) resolution, a contrast ratio of 600 to 1, a brightness level of 300cd, and 12ms response speed (which is lousy for action movies and games). Pretty neat - too bad it ain’t wide enough to support both TV and computer output comfortably. The DAY232TP looks set to be a Korea only device.

LG Super Multi Security drive launched

LG Super Multi Security drive launchedLG has just launched the Super Multi Security drive in the U.K., making that region the earliest to pick up the first DVD/CD re-writer equipped with SecurDisc technology in the world. This is made possible as SecurDisc technology adds layers of security as the disc is being burnt. This process is achieved by applying passwords, digital signatures and copy protection to data DVD/CDs during the burning process. Each disc is subsequently encrypted and requires a viewing application to view the data on it. Sounds pretty impressive - I wonder when will hackers crack this?

Meizu improves on M3 Music Card

Meizu improves on M3 Music CardLooks like the folks at Meizu are pretty busy at the moment, giving the M3 Music Card a little redesign love to keep interest in its MP3 player going. While news of any change (physically or otherwise) to the M3 Music Card have yet to be confirmed, one can expect better functionality in an updated body that will definitely make the predecessor look old in comparison, as the previous plastic case will be replaced by a metal shell which is way more solid and visually appealing. Meizu has also decided to retain the black and white colors for the customer to choose from. iPod nano or the M3 Music Card?

Sailplane for boring days at the office

Sailplane for boring days at the office

Forget about tossing paper planes in the class. Technology has rendered the traditional art of paper aeroplane origami obsolete, as we now have the Super Feather Lightweight Sailplane. This toy weighs a mere 3 grams and requires only 10 seconds of charging time in exchange for a flight path of up to 100 meters. Looks like this will be a pretty neat office toy to have, especially during those Mondays that seem to stretch much longer than a Friday. Brando is currently carrying the Super Feather Lightweight Sailplane for $15.50 a pop.
