8 Intel cores faster than 16 AMD cores?

8 Intel cores faster than 16 AMD cores? Our sister site Uberpulse is reporting that intel has demonstrated that their next-gen 8-Core CPU is faster than AMD’s 16-core CPU at ray-tracing, using Persistence Of Vision (POV), a well-known ray-tracer. AMD was the first ones to use POV and intel has decided to beat them at their own game. I always recommend caution over a benchmark not done by an independent entity, but if this “win” turns out to be as good as Intel claims, AMD would be in big troubles. Go and check the story at Uberpulse.

Microdrone RC spy camera

Microdrone RC spy cameraThe local police in the U.K. are currently putting the Microdrone on trial, a device that helps monitor suspects located below as it flies around the vicinity, using the built-in CCTV camera as its eyes. An officer on the ground will control the Microdrone, but he must be wearing a special visor in order to see what the Microdrone sees. Statistics show that there is a CCTV camera for every 14 people in the U.K. (which is surprisingly high), so having a few of these bobbing up and down the skies won’t really make any difference. I just didn’t realize that we have to be policed more when it comes to reducing the chance for a crime to occur. Pretty ironic, ain’t it?

Sony PSP owners to make VoIP calls soon

Sony PSP owners to make VoIP calls soon

While there are way more DS Lite owners than PSP owners around, the latter’s numbers are by no means a minority. PSP owners will soon be able to make voice and video calls to other PSP owners and selected BT cellphones via a WiFi connection. The software used will be provided by BT, and there are plans for these to call PCs, fixed lines, and cellphones in the future. The service will initially be available in the U.K. and is not compatible outside of homes and selected BT wireless hotspots. This news is great, but I sure hope Sony remembers this painful lesson - it is games that move consoles, whether they be handhelds or otherwise.

VIA unveils first Pico-ITX motherboard

VIA unveils first Pico-ITX motherboardThe VIA EPIA PX motherboard is based on the recently announced Pico-ITX form factor, measuring a mere 3.9″ x 2.8″ in size. According to VIA, this platform is capable of running the processor and chipset at 9W and 3.5W respectively, giving users the chance to run standard productivity and multimedia applications below 13W. A 1GHz VIA C7 processor overlooks the proceedings, while the motherboard itself can hold up to 1GB of DDR2 RAM. If you’re really that hard up for space in your apartment and want to do some word processing on occasion, building a computer with this motherboard is definitely a novel space saving idea.

Paradigm shift with warm laptop issue

Paradigm shift with warm laptop issue

Here’s an interesting take on laptops - while others are busy trying to keep theirs cool, why not turn this apparent disadvantage around by using it’s heat to keep you warm? Clement Eloy has fleshed out this paradigm shift by creating a pair of slippers complete with a powerbrick-sized slot that helps keep your toes warm and comfortable during those frigid, freezing winter nights. There is no thermostat on this thing, so the best way to keep yourself warm is to overwork your laptop with processor intensive tasks. I suppose the same concept goes for your desktop computer - just turn the entire thing the other way round, using the fan behind to blow out warm air at your legs.

Pico WiFi radio not limited by wires

Pico WiFi radio not limited by wiresWhile the idea of WiFi radio is neat, having it hooked up to a nearby power outlet at all times is not. Revo is offering it’s Pico WiFi Radio that comes with an integrated rechargeable battery pack, giving you the freedom to bring it anywhere with you without worrying about the presence of power outlets. The Pico WiFi Radio features a 2-line display and can stream up to 5,500 digital radio stations via broadband or from your collection of MP3s over a network. While it is splashproof, submerging the Pico WiFi Radio is a definite no-no. Just in case you wander out of a WiFi blanket, there is always the built-in FM receiver to take over. The Pico WiFi Radio retails for $295 and will be available in the middle of July onwards.

Future Samsung phones to follow YP-K5?

Future Samsung phones to follow YP-K5?

Samsung’s YP-K5 MP3 player which was released earlier this year came in an extremely different design, featuring a unique slide out/slanting speaker that was head and shoulders above the rest of the competition. Samsung apparently loves this design and will port it over to future Samsung cellphones and media players if information from these patent filings are anything to go by. I personally think these new designs will be the next big thing, just like how the Motorola StarTac kicked off the clamshell craze. After all, with phones getting all the more multimedia intensive these days, a form factor such as this is perfect for viewing videos on the go. There is no word on when an official product sporting this design will be released.

Bose surround sound system in headrest

Bose surround sound system in headrest

Masters of sound (although some people might argue otherwise) Bose has recently filed a spanking new patent that features a surround sound system fitted onto the headrest of a seat. While this setup does not make sense at home, it targets the vehicle market, giving passengers the best 5.1 experience possible during those long road trips. This system will also feature the ability to hook up to a cellphone and can be installed in office chairs as well, although watching a movie in the office could get pretty tricky with all those tracking software installed on your computer. Who do you think will fall for this more - movie buffs or gamers?

Epson P-3000 portable media player

Epson P-3000 portable media player

Epson is more famous for making printers than portable media players, but that did not stop them from unveiling the Epson P-3000. This hard drive-based portable media player comes with 40GB worth of storage space and plays H.264 format videos on its 4″ display. While the P-3000 gets three hours of playback time for video, it performs at double the length for audio - nothing impressive to be sure, as the disparity between video and audio playback time is usually much more than that. Forking out $499 for it seems pretty steep - I think most people would prefer to stick to their 80GB iPod Videos despite the smaller screen size. What about you?

TwinBird waterproof MP3 player

TwinBird waterproof MP3 player

TwinBird lays claim that its latest MP3 player is waterproof, so you get to listen to your favorite tunes while giving yourself a good scrub. Unfortunately, this TwinBird MP3 player comes with a mere 128MB of storage space, with no word on whether it will come with a memory card slot of some kind. Should 128MB be all there is to it, you would probably use this as an exercise and shower companion, leaving it at home in favor of your iPod whenever you head off on long road trips. How many of you actually listen to MP3s while in the bathroom anyway?
